Debate One Down
Wow. I was seriously impressed tonight with Obama's performance. He was aggressive and knowledgeable, and managed to throw every embarrassing McCain quotation (and a few Bush quotations as well) back in the man's face. McCain, by contrast, seemed scattered and fishing for topics, coming back into coherence only on a few particular issues.

Of course, my worry is that partisan news sources will simply collect the clips that support their candidate and declare him the victor, so Fox News will be all about "McCain's stunning performance" and declare him the winner, as they would regardless. MSNBC at this point is probably equally skewed towards Obama. I kind of miss the Fairness Doctrine, which Reagan's FCC axed back in 1985.

Still, from where I stand, TRYING to look at it objectively even though I have my own biases to be sure, Obama looked like he came across far more in control and focused, answering McCain's criticisms of him far more skillfully than McCain answered Obama's challenges.

Will it matter? Does anything at these debates change voting behavior, and will we get any real sense from the so-called polls of what people actually think? I can't bear to listen to any commentary tonight so I'll have to wait to find out what the media decides reality will be like tomorrow...

Practically every poll coming out clearly shows that Obama won, and won Independents around 3 to 2.

I watched the reaction dial feed on CNN, and Obama was clearly pounding McCain into the ground at some critical points, especially with indies.

McCain needed to absolutely destroy Obama tonight, and it simply did not happen. This was his one and only shot, and he failed. Obama merely needed to introduce himself to Americans in the same room with McCain, and show that he wasn't a total doofus, which he clearly did. Obama was calm, poised and Presidential. McCain was a petty, vindictive old man taking umbridge at that "uppity nigra" and how dare he challenge him? Get off my lawn!

What I can't wait for is the veep debate. The CW is that McCain's people have been absolutely freaking out like school girls on crack over how bad Palin has been in mock debates, and that they are absolutely desperate to keep her out of any debates. Hell, Biden gave the post-debate cheer for Obama and Palin...didn't. She got the invite, but they put Rudy in her place. Clearly, things are going badly for her, and will not get any better.

Still, you and I are like Cubs fans. We're never going to believe the Dems are going to win until they actually somehow manage to defy all expectations and win.

Indeed. All I can take heart with is that, while the Cubs never did win, the Red Sox finally did...twice...
